My father is a university professor, and my mother is a graduate teacher. I have two sisters, one elder and one younger. My elder sister is a chartered architect with a Master's Degree from the University of Moratuwa . My younger sister is studying Law.
I was born on April 10th, 1975 . My full name is Chandrasekara Mudiyanselage Sandaruwan Jeewahastha Madduma Bandara. My grandmother claimed that we can trace our ancestry all the way back to the Malla kings of North India who participated in the burial ceremony of the Lord Buddha. My ancestor is supposed to have come to Sri Lanka and joined the court of Kind Pandhukabhaya (around 300 B.C.).
I first went to kindergarten in Illorin , Nigeria , in 1977. My father had taken our entire family to live there for two years when he received an appointment as a lecturer at the University of Illorin . We returned to Sri Lanka in 1979 and I joined Trinity College , Kandy . I studied at Trinity until Year 5 (1986), when we went to Cambridge , UK . My father had done his Ph.D. at Cambridge , and when he took his sabbatical leave from the University of Peradeniya , he got a position as a visiting scholar at St. John's College,Cambridge. I studied at Parkside Community College in Cambridge for one year.
We returned to Sri Lanka in 1987 and I transferred to Dharmaraja_College, Kandy . I did my "O" Level exams in 1991 and entered the Commerce stream for "A" Levels. I joined the College Cadet Platoon in 1992 and we became 1st runners up at the national Herman Loos competition. In the same year I founded The Young Writers' Association, with the patronage of Professor Ashley Halpe. The Association is a national level forum for young people writing creatively in English. I was appointed a College Prefect and became Deputy Head Prefect in 1993. I captained the College English Debating Team at several competitions.
I wrote a children's novel, "St. Anarchy's College", in 1990. The manuscript was accepted by Rupa & Company of India in 1992 and was published in 1994.
Since my father was a lecturer at the University of Peradeniya I had always been an insider to the local higher education scene. Disillusioned by what I saw I had resolved to either do my higher studies in another country or not do them at all. I took the SAT, TOEFL and ACHIEVEMENTS tests in 1993 and applied to US colleges. I received a scholarship from Franklin_&_Marshall_College (F&M), which I attended from 1994-1998.
In 1995 I founded the Franklin & Marshall College Parliamentary Debating Club and Team. By the time I graduated the club had a substantial membership and the team comprising of more than 30 students had been to over 15 tournaments. With my partner, David Mull, I represented F&M at the National Parliamentary Debating Championships in Washington D.C. I graduated from Franklin & Marshall college in May 1998 with a degree in Business Administration (Management).
While at F&M I completed writing my collection of short stories, "just_another_bomb_blast", for some of which I have received national level awards in Sri Lanka . I self published this book in 1999 (it is available with VijithaYapa , Sarasavi , M.D.Gunesena , Bookland, Bare Foot, Taprobane, etc). It was well reviewed in the national newspapers including by Dr. Ashley Halpe and Carl Muller. I also did a brief book interview on TNL radio with Michelle Perera.
I joined ANZ Grindlays Bank (now part of Standard Chartered Bank) in Colombo as a Management Trainee in September 1998. Having completed the comprehensive one-year training in banking I decided that it was not the career for me. I found the nature of the work too sedentary and unchallenging. I left in October 1999 to form my own computer hardware and services company - MBT.I was also fortunate enough to meet Mr. Patrick Claesson who sold me his company 3CS and introduced to many contacts in the field. Currently I am working as the Managing Director of both companies.
MBT and 3CS have both grown dramatically . The companies now boast a large and influential clientele of individuals and companies. We also administer several high profile web sites. Even with the economy in crisis, both companies recorded strong growth.
In October 2000, thanks to the patronage of Prof. K. M. De Silva, I had the opportunity of being the youngest member of a Sri Lankan delegation to a Track II SAARC conference held in New Delhi.
In October 2002 I self published my third book, "Lionsong", written on the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka . It is a research work spanning 735 pages and took me about seven years to write. Lionsong is available with Vijitha_Yapa, Barefoot, Bookland, Sarasavi, and Lakehouse. I am currently working on a novel and a collection of poems.
I became involved in active politics at the national level in Sri Lanka after my graduation from college. I created and designed the United National Party web site in 1999. I helped in the campaign of Mr. Karu Jayasuriya for Chief Minister of the Western Province, and in Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe's Presidential Campaign. I was a member of Mr. Milinda Moragoda's professional think tank for the Colombo East electorate. For three years I was the administrator of Milinda Moragoda's website. I also worked closely with the UNP's Kandy group at the Parliamentary election of December 2001.
I have published a variety of articles on political and economic themes in national newspapers in both English and Sinhala.
I worked as an aide to Hon. W.J.M. Lokubandara, who was the Minister of Justice, Buddha Sasana and National Integration. Later I worked as an aide for Mr. Lokubandara when he was appointed as the Speaker of the House of Parliament in 2004. After contesting at the local Government elections I entered the Kandy Municipal Council in 2005 as a councillor.
It has been a lifelong dream for me to help steer Sri Lanka away from the chaos and corruption it now wallows in.
I plan to contest for Parliament at a future general election.
